Mr. Genest's Class Expectations for Chemistry:
1 Is there an electronic version of everything we do? Yes, posted daily at http:genest.weebly.com
2 What should I bring to class? (1) any notebook* (2) a calculator** (3) something to write with. * I prefer a composition book but spiral or three-ring binder are fine. ** Any calculator is fine that has these keys: and either or . The TI-30 or Casio 260 are $14 and come in solar solar models that never need battery replacement. Graphing calculators are acceptable but sort of overly elaborate. Note: On test days, everyone must use a non-graphing calculator.
3 Is there extra credit? No.
4 Is there homework? Yes, four nights a week. Check each day’s assignment by 5pm at http:genest.weebly.com
5 What’s the routine in here? We do a lot of work in groups of two or four. We use the same whiteboarding routine as East HS Physics. This is called ‘Modeling’ and is part of a national program coordinated by Arizona State University [click here] and the AMTA [click here] A typical three week period will have points going into Infinite Campus almost every day. To be marked on time at the bell you should be in your assigned seat, starting to write the ‘Purpose’. 6 What DON’T I need to make up when absent? If you are absent for a quiz or lab, you don’t need to make it up. I will just average your other scores so there is no penalty for missing a quiz or lab.
7 What DO I need to make up when absent? You must make up tests! Otherwise you get a zero for the missed test and may not pass! You must also make up homework! You get a zero for a missed homework.
For excused absences, you will have the number of days you were absent to make up work. You are responsible for coming in to get missed assignment – I won’t remind you what you were absent for. Makeup work is self service: You grab it from the three-ring binder at any time. The binder is at the front of the room under the American Flag. Alternatively, all the assignments are online: access the homework each day at http:genest.weebly.com
Late homework is accepted, at a penalty, up until the day of the unit test. Homework from after the test is worthless to you (you already took the test that the homework was practice for) until you need it for the final exam. The final exam is cumulative and will look a lot like the old homework problems.
8 How many people do well in chemistry by never asking for help? Very few. Chemistry is hard; just ask last year’s students! [click here] I assume you will come get help from me and from other people who know chemistry. You can find me during the following times: · Before school -- not available. Preparing to teach. ·1st Hr teaching Earth Science in 3028 ·2nd Hr teaching Earth Science in 3028 ·3rd Hr not available. Preparing to teach. ·4th Hr teaching Chemistry in 3043 ·Lunch in 3043, totally available, glad and welcoming ·5th Hr available, in a small room that opens off of the back wall of the back wall of our chemistry classroom, 3043 ·6th Hr teaching Chemistry in 3043 ·7th Hr teaching Chemistry in 3043 After school in 3043, Tuesdays and Thursdays, totally available from 3:40 to 5:00
Just show up; you don't need to tell me ahead of time.
I respond well to emails [[email protected]]. Students often email me around 7 or 8 pm to ask about what's on the test or what to skip on homework, for example. After about 9pm I might not check it until the morning.
If a tutor is helping you, show them the class website: http:genest.weebly.com , updated daily at 5pm.
9 What’s the secret to getting a good grade? Don’t go study the night before. Go study every single night by giving a sincere effort to the daily homework. You’ll never learn this if you put it off to the end of the week.
